MES Opens New Warehouse in Houston

To provide the best service and ease delivery challenges due to port congestion due the strike and aftermath, MES, Inc. has opened an additional warehouse facility in Houston, TX.

We plan to use this warehouse as a backup in cases of East Coast or West Coast Port Issues. With a commitment to be within 2-3 shipping days of our customer’s plants, we will also use this location to support our growing customer base in Mississippi, Alabama and Juarez, Mexico.

MES, Inc. responded early to the Los Angeles Port strike warnings by routing much of our customer cargo through Houston, Texas.
With a potential strike looming, our first containers rolled through Houston by mid-October–well before our customers and competitors alike were trying to push their cargo through LA.

While the port strike did cause us to delay about 20% of our cargo which we could not divert, all other cargo was diverted to Houston and Tacoma to ensure a relatively smooth supply for our customers.

Key to success was good planning with our 3PL, but more importantly, our Ningbo-based supply chain team worked hard and proactively with cargo bookings. The Ningbo team worked very closely with the freighters, carriers, and suppliers in Ningbo and Shanghai to make sure that our bookings were a priority.
As the port strike comes to an end, it will take 2-3 months to clear up the congestion and start normal operations. However, we have found ourselves ahead of the curve with our advanced planning and collaborative activities at the manufacturing source.

Seeing the positive benefit of Houston as a backup resource, and further seeing opportunities for our customers in Alabama and Mississippi, we have decided to make Houston a permanent warehouse.
