MES Inc. takes great pride in its ongoing collaboration with academia not only to tap into the great resource that the students enrolled in the top business programs represent, but also to contribute to their exposure to the challenges businesses face on a regular basis. Part of this collaboration, last week, Alina Harastasanu our own Business Analyst gave a presentation to the students enrolled in the Ohio Export Internship Program (OEIP) on the importance of the Free Trade Agreements. Alina talked about several topics of interest to US companies engaging in import-export, including:

  • The results of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) since its creation, including the biases on trade deficit and loss of US manufacturing jobs;
  • What changes we can expect from the new Presidential Administration and how they will impact companies, especially the automotive industry;
  • The consequences of US withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), identifying winners and losers with an accent on the automotive industry;
  • Future expectations and relevance of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between US and the European Union.

OEIP, which began in 2012, demonstrates the positive impact of partnerships between the state of Ohio, its universities, and private industry. The Ohio State University and the Ohio Development Services Agency formed this strategic partnership with the goal to train a global workforce, grow export sales, and create jobs within small to medium-sized Ohio companies. The overall mission is to help close the skills gap between Ohio companies that need employees who know how to export and students from universities across the state of Ohio who have developed those critical global business skills.

The Ohio Export Internship Program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to apply classroom learning to current challenges businesses face in today’s global economy. A semester class and a 12-week work experience gives interns the opportunity to work with real people at real companies exporting real products. These internships create a workforce that helps Ohio expand exports, builds students’ global competencies, and makes a difference for Ohio businesses.
