CNC Machining Services

Globally Sourced, Precision CNC Machining

CNC machining — Computer Numerical Control machining — is a subtractive manufacturing process in which computer-controlled cutting tools remove material from a solid workpiece to produce a precisely dimensioned component. CNC programs translate digital design files into precise tool paths, enabling highly repeatable production of complex metal and plastic parts to tight dimensional tolerances.

MES, Inc. sources and manages precision CNC machined components for the world’s most demanding manufacturers. Tight tolerances. Complex geometries. Consistent quality at volume. And a supply chain team that owns every step from the machine shop floor to your door.

Supply Chain Ownership

More Than a CNC Machining Supplier — A Supply Chain Partner

Finding a CNC machine shop isn't the hard part. Managing the supply chain behind your machined components — capacity, quality at the source, lead time reliability, inventory levels, and on-time delivery — is where most suppliers leave you on your own. MES was built to own that entire problem.

Dedicated Supply Chain Specialist

Every MES customer is assigned a dedicated supply chain specialist whose sole focus is your account. They track your machined parts from production release through delivery in real time, provide proactive lead time updates, and serve as your single point of contact. You'll never wonder where your parts are — because someone whose job is your supply chain will always know.

Demand Planners Assigned to Your Account

MES planners work directly with your team on forecasting and inventory management. Whether you're managing seasonal demand swings, product launches, engineering changes, or supply disruptions, your planner builds strategies that keep your production running without costly overstock or line-down events.

In-Factory Quality Teams

MES quality engineers are stationed inside our manufacturing partners' facilities — not waiting at a receiving dock. They verify dimensional accuracy against your drawing, review first article inspection reports, monitor in-process controls, and ensure critical features are confirmed before parts ship.

Global Warehousing Network

MES operates warehouses in Poland, Ohio (domestic buffer stock and JIT delivery for North America) and Mexico (near-shore inventory for the U.S. Sun Belt). Your machined components are positioned close to where you need them — compressing lead times, protecting against supply disruptions, and enabling JIT delivery programs.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About CNC Machining

CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process in which computer-controlled cutting tools remove material from a solid workpiece — metal, plastic, or composite — to produce a finished component. A CNC program, generated from a CAD model using CAM software, directs the machine’s axes and cutting tools along precise paths to create the required features. Because the process is computer-controlled, it produces highly repeatable results across production runs of any size, from single prototypes to tens of thousands of parts.

CNC turning rotates the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool to produce cylindrical features — outer diameters, bores, threads, grooves, and tapers. It is the process of choice for rotational parts like shafts, hubs, bushings, and pins. CNC milling moves a rotating cutting tool against a stationary (or repositioning) workpiece to produce prismatic features — flat surfaces, pockets, slots, holes, and contoured 3D geometries. Many complex components require both turning and milling operations.

Standard CNC machining tolerances are typically ±0.001 inches (±0.025 mm) for general features. Tight-tolerance features — critical bores, bearing fits, and mating interfaces — can be machined to ±0.0005 inches (±0.013 mm) or better with appropriate process controls and tooling. Surface finishes typically range from 125 Ra for general machined surfaces to 32 Ra or finer for ground or honed features. MES quality teams verify critical dimensions at the source using CMM equipment before parts ship.

CNC machining is compatible with a wide range of metals and engineering plastics. Commonly machined metals include aluminum alloys (6061, 7075), carbon and alloy steels (1018, 4140, 4340), stainless steels (304, 316, 17-4 PH), ductile and gray iron, brass, copper, magnesium, and titanium. Engineering plastics including Delrin (acetal), PEEK, nylon, and UHMW polyethylene can also be precision machined. Material selection is driven by the mechanical, thermal, and corrosion requirements of the application.

5-axis CNC machining refers to a machining center capable of moving a cutting tool or workpiece along five simultaneous axes — three linear axes (X, Y, Z) plus two rotational axes. This allows complex, multi-sided features to be machined in a single setup without repositioning the part, which improves geometric accuracy, reduces cycle time, and enables features that are impossible to reach with conventional 3-axis machines. 5-axis machining is particularly valuable for complex aerospace, automotive, and medical components.

PPAP — Production Part Approval Process — is a formal documentation and approval process used primarily in the automotive industry to ensure that a supplier’s manufacturing process can consistently produce a part that meets all drawing requirements. PPAP typically includes dimensional results, material certifications, process flow diagrams, control plans, and sample parts. MES supports PPAP submission requirements for automotive and other customers who require it as part of their supplier qualification process.

MES assigns quality engineers directly inside our partner manufacturing facilities. Before parts ship, our teams verify dimensional accuracy against your drawing using CMM equipment, review first article inspection reports, monitor in-process controls, and confirm critical features. CMM results, material certifications, and inspection documentation travel with every order. Problems are identified and resolved at the machine shop — not discovered when parts arrive at your facility.

CNC machining lead times vary based on part complexity, material availability, and production volume. Prototype quantities can often be completed in 1 to 3 weeks. Production orders typically range from 4 to 10 weeks depending on complexity and volume. MES customers benefit from dedicated supply chain specialists who actively manage lead times and warehousing programs that position buffer inventory near your facility, effectively compressing replenishment lead times for high-volume programs.
