Hybrid vehicles require precision aluminum components across the entire vehicle, including eCVT and transmission housings, e-motor housings, inverter and power control unit housings, battery enclosures and trays, cooling plates, front subframes, suspension knuckles, control arms, and a wide range of mounts and structural brackets.
Hybrid programs rely on a combination of processes. High-pressure die casting is used for transmission housings, motor housings, and inverter enclosures. Forging delivers high-load suspension and chassis components. Aluminum extrusion is the dominant process for battery enclosures and cooling plates. CNC machining provides the precision interfaces required across all of them.
Aluminum offers the strength-to-weight ratio, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and recyclability hybrid programs require. Lightweighting is critical because hybrids carry both an internal combustion powertrain and an electrified powertrain, and every kilogram saved improves fuel economy and electric-only range.
Hybrid battery enclosures are most commonly produced through aluminum extrusion with CNC machining and friction-stir welded or fastened assembly. The result is a lightweight, structurally rigid enclosure that protects the cells, manages thermal load through integrated cooling features, and meets crash safety requirements.
Hybrid transmission and motor housings typically require precision machining to ±0.005 mm to ±0.02 mm at bearing seats, sealing surfaces, and gear interfaces. Concentricity and balance are particularly critical for e-motor housings.
Aluminum die castings (A380, ADC12, and equivalent alloys), aluminum extrusions (6000-series alloys), aluminum forgings (6061, 7075), magnesium alloys for select applications, and a range of steels for forged powertrain and chassis components.
