The Impact of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)

MES publishes today the second research in the White Paper Series, an initiative of the Business Development Department meant to bring insightful industry analysis to our stakeholders. The objective was to assess how and to what extent the Trans-Pacific Partnership will affect the automotive, lighting, heavy  machinery and energy equipment industries, the main industries MES serves.  We took a step back to look at the intricacies of the global trade agreements, the trade indicators such as tariffs, number of days and documents needed to import and export, container costs, rules of origin compared to NAFTA, trade surplus and deficits of the 12 countries involved etc. The analysis emphasized the position of the United States, identifies winners and losers and draws conclusions on what we can expect moving forward. Surprisingly, it also shows that China might not be as disadvantaged as it was originally thought from its absence from the negotiation […]

Outsourced Manufacturing Considerations

This is the most metric-intensive portion of the supply chain process—one where we continuously measure quality levels, production output and productivity. Outsourced Manufacturing Considerations Manufacturers are increasingly relying on outsourced manufacturing as they struggle to keep manufacturing costs in check, shorten product cycles and stay competitive in their market. Outsourced manufacturing, done well, can help manufacturers save money on everything from facility costs, tooling, equipment purchases and maintenance, as well as staffing. Outsourced manufacturing can also allow for the expansion of core competencies and help protect companies from supply interruptions. As compelling as the savings are, sacrificing quality or lead times can end up costing manufacturers more money in the long term. You must ensure that the outsourced manufacturing vendor has the technical capabilities, capacity, facilities, and systems to provide the products according to your specifications and will provide the service you expect. You should assess the willingness and capability […]
