MES Associate Rides Over 700 Miles for Cancer Research

In 2008, Pelotonia was established with a clear objective; to fund life-saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. This three-day experience includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment, and volunteerism. 100% of every dollar raised directly to cancer research, and through the first 11 years, over $207,000,000 was raised for cancer research. This year, Pelotonia took a more individualized and virtual approach in its battle against cancer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of canceling the event, Pelotonia came up with a creative solution known as MyPelotonia. MyPelotonia enabled participants to be creative in raising funds for cancer research such as riding, walking, running, swimming, writing notes of thanks to front line workers, making masks, volunteering for other organizations, and so many more. This approach allowed others to participate in ways they never could before, especially non-bike riders.

Every year, there are countless touching moments and personal stories shared by participants, from the cancer survivors to the riders participating for their lost loved ones to the ones who want to do the right thing. Pelotonia has a special connection with one of our very own associates, Bud Abraham. Bud is a 12-year cancer survivor, with many close family and friends affected by cancer. This is his way of contributing to fight against cancer and raised over $3000 this year, $26,700 in the previous 11 years.

Bud was one of approximately 2300 riders the first year, who participates typically in the 100-mile ride, but this was different. After reading about other professional riders taking on what was known as the “Everest” challenge, Bud was determined and accepted. “Cancer patients, families, doctors, nurses, and researchers climb Mt. Everest every day when dealing with cancer and working to find a cure for cancer.”, Bud said. He successfully biked 389 laps, reached a total of 29,259ft in total elevation gained, 713 miles in 43 hours, all within 33 days. Truly amazing!

Bud’s story has touched us all, here at MES. His courage and determination to fight through his treatments and as a 12-year cancer survivor are truly remarkable and inspirational.
